Script Excerpt

This is the final scene of the play, in which Esther and Xerxes are reconciled

XERXES:

Is everything now right in the kingdom.

ESTHER:

I know little of the kingdom. But in your palace there are two women who deserve great rewards. Mikel, who is in charge of the harem, and the woman Taksha who has recently come to this throne room have been my constant companions since the day I first came here.

XERXES:

We must devise a fitting reward for them. Is there anything else.

ESTHER:

Not at this time your majesty. I will return to the harem.

XERXES:

No.

ESTHER:

Your majesty?

XERXES:

Well, you may if you wish. But I would prefer that you stayed here.

ESTHER:

I don't understand.

XERXES:

Esther...is that your real name?

ESTHER:

No. It's Hadassah.

XERXES:

What does it mean.

ESTHER:

It's a type of tree.

XERXES:

How little I knew about you.

ESTHER:

I'm sorry.

XERXES:

No. It is my fault. Esth...Hadassah. You are a mystery. You once said I had everything but a wife. And I fear that is no less true now than it was then...though I found a queen. But...when I saw I might lose you it was as if I was looking at my own death. What I mean to say is...if it pleases your majesty, and you regard me with favor...I should like it very much if you were my wife as well as my queen.

ESTHER:

What about Taksha?

XERXES:

She is very beautiful. But I do not love her.

ESTHER:

If your majesty will forgive the question, how can I know if I'm any different.

XERXES:

Maybe you could tell me.

ESTHER:

I'm afraid it will take time.

XERXES:

As long as it takes

(He sings)

My dearest love and queen I'll do whatever I must I do,

For in all the world there is no girl I love as much as you,

And if I had to dig the deepest well, push a mountain to the sea

I could sing while I was working if I knew that you loved me.

ESTHER:

Only words. But it is a start. It is a start.
