Candidate Species
When a species is thought to be nearing endangered levels, it may be
placed on a list of "candidates" for formal listing on the
Federal Endangered Species List. The rules for listing candidate
species have been greatly revised and, as a result, only those species
which have sufficient information to support a proposed listing
(formerly known as Category 1 species) are considered candidate species.
A list of species for which the Service had some information indicating
that it may be in trouble but not enough to determine whether listing
was appropriate (formerly known as Category 2 species) will no longer
be maintained.
The 1994 list of candidate mollusk species for Alabama (before these
rule changes) is available in table or
text-only format.
An attempt has been made to remove species from this list that have
since been formally recognized as endangered or threatened.
Candidate Alabama mollusk species as of September 19, 1997:
- Campeloma, slender (snail) (Campeloma decampi);
- ("Currier" Binney, 1865); Viviparidae
- Marstonia, armored (=thick-shelled) (Pyrgulopsis pachyta (=Marstonia p.));
- (F. G. Thompson, 1977); Hydrobiidae
