Com 310: Ethics Tutorial One Feedback! |
Updated: 03/12/2003
Tutoral Rewrites are DUE FRIDAY by NOON. You MUST turn in your original tutorial with the rewrite. If you elect not to rewrite, please give me your original back with a NOTE on it, indicating that you want that grade doubled. Remember you have to have a score of 40 or higher to double the grade in lieu of rewriting the tutorial. JM
Tutorials this time had many of the same problems that occur each semester. The biggest problem is lack of specificity and structure.
Structure: The tutorial should have five to six paragraphs:
Paragraph 1: Introduction. This paragraph should state the overall them of the book, the three or four main ideas which support it, and the fact that your will relate those to media.
Paragraph 2: Main argument 1 which should correspond to the discussion with the first main discursive opponent. Be specific, address the logic of the arguments. You should include definitions of key terms and no more than a sentence or two for media application.
Paragraph 3: Same as above with arguments of Socrates second opponent.
Paragraph 4: Same as above with third opponent.
Paragraph 5: Depending on how you group key themes, you might have an additional paragraph.
Paragraph 6: Conclusion. Tell me what you did and why I should care.
Key Problems with Tutorials:
Lots of "fertilizer." Some of you have not read the book.
Lack of reference to the logical arguments that Socrates made.
No definitions of terms.
Absence of key ideas.
Poor spelling and grammar.
Sloppy papers (a few with scribbles, etc.)
Way too much double talk and "pad." Get to the point quickly and concisely.
Too much time spent on media examples with only a sentence or two per paragraph on what was actually in Georgias. Keep the examples to a sentence or two and make the bulk of your text deal with what was in the book. (Some of you could have written what you wrote without ever having read the book.....)
Key Ideas:
The arguments of Georgias, Polus and Callicles
Oratory
Cookery
Pandering
Good versus pleasure
Punishment
Leadership vs. Might
How do these concepts fit into the three main concepts discussed and how do those three concepts support the overall theme of the book ?
Some of you really played with the margins...I don't have so much trouble with smaller margins and tinier type, but I do have problems with wide margins and big types. Times New Roman 12 and Ariel 10 is acceptable. Spacing may be 1.5 to double line spacing. Use your spell checker and grammar checker.
I have the sense that some of you just took the class discussion and put your notes in the tutorial. That showed in your work, because I did not discuss everything in class which needs to be in the tutorial. If you had no support for your main ideas, I took it to mean your reading was not completed nor possibly ever begun. If you did read the book and reflected so little of it, then the problems are different.......
Good luck!!!
