Discuss the
difference between the Trusteeship model and the Marketplace Model of broadcast
regulation. What are the basic principles upon which each is based, and what
are the practical results of each for broadcasters? Illustrate each model by
discussing what position its proponents have taken on the issue of the FAIRNESS
DOCTRINE and why.
Discuss the
progression of mass communications theory from the Magic Bullet Theory through
current approaches. In your essay, focus on the major conceptual philosophies
involved and use specific theories to illustrate. This is not to be LIST of
mass com theories, rather a discussion of the growth of theoretical thought and
why one concept supplanted another, as well as why some coexist.
Discuss the issue of
First Amendment parity between print and broadcast media. What are the key
elements of this issue? What has been determined by the courts, and why have the courts taken those
positions? Support your points by illustrating with the two key cases discussed
in class. Finally, what do YOU think about parity and WHY?
Discuss broadcasting
deregulation in the 1980's. What happened in the areas of licensing, ownership,
programming, cable carriage and technical rules? How was the industry impacted
by these changes?
What role did the
broadcast media play in the formation of public opinion during the Vietnam War?
What important broadcasts were major influences? Explain how these events
illustrate the concepts of gatekeeping, agenda setting and status conferral.
Discuss the influence
of television on children. What are the key areas of influence?
In what ways can television influence children positively or negatively. What have government policy makers done related to this issue? Finally, do you believe their efforts are necessary, effective and justified? What do YOU think should be done?
Discuss
the influence of sexually explicit and violent media content on its consumers.
Specifically address the four effects identified in Dr. Victor Cline's
research. What harms, if any, are involved and what are the theoretical basis
for explaining this process. How did the first-person materials presented in
class and in your study packet support or refute Dr. Cline's position?
