Questions for Discussion:   Bernard Goldberg's Bias

1.        What was wrong with the story about the flat tax that prompted Goldberg' s original op-ed piece?

2.       Goldberg said he didn't notice much bias before 1980?  Why do you think that was so?  Was there no bias before 1980?  What happened in 1980 to make the difference?

3.       What is the problem with institutional loyalty, according to Goldberg?  Is it reason enough, not to ask Dan any "tough questions?

4.        What is "identity" politics?  What are some examples from the book of how they contribute to bias in the news?

5.        How did Clinton end homelessness?

6.        Why was AIDs covered the way it was?

7.        How are the roles of personal choice and responsibility and government programs in the causes and solutions to social programs seen differently by conservatives and liberals and how does that affect the content of news?

8.        What is the ultimate thesis of Goldberg's book?

9.        What does he hope to accomplish with it?  What solutions to the problems does he propose?

10.        What are the weaknesses of the book?
