Dr. Mc's Advising Guide

Advising is very important to your success here at U.N.A. It is VERY IMPORTANT that you take classes in the proper order, that you finish your general studies in the first two years and that you plan in advance. Meeting with your advisor will help you do those things successfully. If you are one of my advisees, here are some things you need to know and do.

Before course schedules come out, you will receive a letter from me announcing when I will be scheduling advising appointments. I have more than 50 advisees, so unfortunately time is limited. I will be doing advising ONE WEEK ONLY. There will be plenty of times available and I will be doing group advising late in the afternoons, but you MUST sign up!

Monday, October 28

Tuesday, October 29

Wednesday, October 30

Thursday, October 31

Friday, November 1

Please sign up A.S.A.P. !

Individual 15 minute appointments will be scheduled and there will be times planned for group advising. If we need more time to discuss issues other than your schedule, we can do that at another time either before or after the advising week.

After you receive the letter, a sign up sheet will be posted outside my door on which you may schedule an appointment. There are some important things you need to do BEFORE you come in for our meeting:

If you are a new advisee, bring a file folder with you; I will have some materials for you. If you are not new, bring your advising folder with ALL records, including your major check sheet (the one I gave you).
Bring you desired schedule of classes for next semester. I will NOT choose classes for you. Nor will I meet with you if you have not worked our your schedule. If you have questions, that's not a problem, but come with a clear idea of what you want to take.

Some other general guidelines:

Be sure you have a copy of the catalogue under which you operate.
Keep accurate records of what you take and the grade reports you get. KEEP ALL paper work having to do with registration.
Always pre-register. You get the courses you want with the fewest hassles.
Get a check sheet from the Registrar's office at the end of your sophomore year; it can eliminate a lot of problems later.
Allow 24 hours between the time you sign up for an appointment and the time of the appointment. I need time to review your file.
Allow 24 hours between the time you have your appointment and you plan to register. We need time to remove your hold.
