- Good mechanics! Spelling, punctuation and grammar should be correct! I count off if
they are not.
- Your report or review should have a clear thesis statement and a beginning, middle
and end. That's a basic of good writing, and you should demonstrate it here.
- I have read most of the books that are on your reading lists, so I do NOT want a
chapter by chapter run down of what's in the book. I need enough of that type of
information to know that you read the book.
- What I do want is YOUR impressions of the book. Did you like it? Did it change your
thinking about some aspect of our field? What did you learn that you didn't know
before? What was the most interesting thing about it? Would you recommend it to
other students? Should I consider it as required reading for the course?
- Of course your paper needs to by typed in a font that equates to Trial or Times New
Roman 10 to 12. Please don't insult me or embarrass yourself by playing "the Font
Game."
- Length for book review papers should be between 3 ½ to 5 pages.
That's about it. Just remember the purpose of this assignment is to encourage you to
read in your field. I have long been concerned that students do not read enough, and
they frequently see reading in their field as a boring chore. Try to pick a book that is
going to be interesting and FUN to read. You CAN have a good time reading many of
the books on the reading list, and some are downright funny!
So, think positively and find a cozy place, a plate of cookies, a cup of hot chocolate and
curl up with a good book!
