THE REDWOOD HOME PAGE

Count since 1/6/2000

This Web site is dedicated to providing information on how to grow California coast redwood and giant Sequoia timber in the southeastern United States. Currently this site includes information on this and related topics such as: members of the redwood family (Taxodiaceae), redwood myths, redwood books, and redwood questions & answers. This site contains links to Web sites that provide forestry related information and forestry related products. Although most of these links have some connection with growing redwood timber in the southeast, other forestry related sites are included. Additional related topics to be added soon include: Southern Redwood News (a monthly newsletter), information about wide range provenance study results, sequoia fossils, evidence to support "fast" evolution theory, and more forestry links. Some other interesting topics, not related to redwood, will also be included in the future such as: rare collectable space hardware, ancient coins, politically incorrect books and the Voynich manuscript. Currently the tables in the following links can best be viewed with Netscape.

This link is to The Freiburg University Web site in Germany. Prior to July 20, 1998 there was a petition drive on this site to save a 100 year old giant Sequoia at the school. The University plans to cut the tree down to make room for a new building. The tree was planted by Gustav Steinmann who also founded the Geological Institute of Freiburg University (around 1886). The University was founded in the year 1457 by Archduke Albert the VI. of Austria. On Monday, July 20, the school adminstration ordered the removal of the pages associated with the petition drive to save one of Germanys oldest giant Sequoias and a memorial to Prof. Steinmann. In general, the Redwood Homepage is dedicated to production of redwoods and Sequoias for timber rather than in their preservation, however, this tree was a memorial to Professor Steinmann who had a great love for these trees and as such should have been saved.

Stuewe and Sons offers a variety of high quality products for both growing and planting tree seedlings.

Sources that are not on the Web:

Many vendors of nursery related products, such as seed dealers, do not have a Web site. The following table lists seed dealers that sell coast redwood seed, giant Sequoia seed or seed from the other members of the Taxodiaceae family. Each of the listed companies is linked to another page at this Web site that provides additional information about their products. It has been our experience that it is cheaper (if we count our time) to purchase seedlings from a seedling nursery rather than grow a few hundred seedlings. The table therefore also includes a source for redwood seedlings. Two other sources for redwood seedlings are the Simpson Timber Nursery, Korbel, California and the Georgia-Pacific Nursery, Ft. Bragg, California. In order to minimize problems with rabbits and deer we recommend planting two year old coast redwood seedlings (P-1). However, we often grow our own seedlings in order to get trees from the very coldest locations (which may only be a small area within a particular seed zone). These potentially cold hardy trees may not be available as nursery grown seedlings.
