According to the preface to the microfilm Land Petition Index, the settlers of that time came as a result of the Napoleonic Wars and emergence of the factory system in Europe. Qualifications for getting land were three: the petitioner must be a British subject, an adult male, and must pay for survey and "improve" land by clering a certain acreage soon after taking possession.
