AUGUSTUS ALLEN
Family tradition states that Augustus Allen was a member of a Beacon Hill family. Augustus had son, Henry A. Allen, who married Isabella Stiles. She was considered beneath the Allen family. Therefore Henry was disowned by his family and all records of his connection to the Beacon Hill Allens were erased. Tradition continues that Henry supported his family as a painter, and that he had a severe drinking problem. There are city records of numerous arrests of Henry Allen for drunken and disorderly conduct. This may have been part of the reason he was disowned. Henry died at an early age by hanging. It is not know positively if the cause was accidental or suicidal. His death left the family in poverty. Isabella was left with four small children and was pregnant with the fifth child. It was at this point and under these conditions that she put one son, Henry A., Jr., up for adoption.
