George Bloomfield

George Bloomfield is so well known in the Canadian film industry, that he is even the butt of well-humored jokes within Canadian TV shows.

This prolific director began his career in his hometown, Montreal, back in the 50's. He had his own theatre company, but as an actor, found the waiting to be frustrating. On the other hand, as a director, he could do what he wanted. He soon obtained a job at the National Film Board, and did short stints as an editor and assistant director. Soon he began directing short pieces.

Although Bloomfield then spent three years at the CBC, he stayed involved in theatre and was a success. So much so that he directed his first feature film in the States, Jenny, a romantic comedy starring Alan Alda did well, and was followed by To Kill a Clown. That picture possessed a strong anti-Vietnam sentiment, and soon the producers wanted to make changes of a political nature before its release. Bloomfield balked at the changes, but the producers prevailed and he went back to Canada, disturbed by the experience.

He was lured back to the CBC in the 70's, and then spent the 80's doing episodic television. Health reasons made insuring him on movies difficult, so he chose the briefer format of the small screen. His name has graced the credits of a multitude of television series -- Adderly, The Campbells, E.N.G, North of 60, La Femme Nikita, E-Z Streets, Neon Rider, Lonesome Dove, The Outer Limits, and SCTV, to name just a few.

His health improved and he was looking forward to doing feature films once more in the mid 1990s, however, Paul Gross negotiated to get him back on board for the last seasons of Due South. "It has always been part of my plan that George would be the elder statesman of the directing corps," admitted Gross. And apparently it worked, for George has returned to the world of upright Mounties and deaf wolves in Chicago.

And in case you're wondering what Mr. Bloomfield looks like, he made a guest appearance in Due South's third season opening episode, "Burning Down the House," as Zoltan Motherwell, a convicted arsonist.

These days Bloomfield remains active directing various television series.
