William FARMER an Indigent Soldier of the Revolution an Inhabitant of this State renouncing all pensions heretofore accruing to him & applying to be heard respecting his claim to the benefit of the law of U S of the 18th of march 1818 testifies & Says that Sometime in the month of april 1776 he enlisted into the fifth Regiment of north Carolina Continental troops at bertie County in Said State under Capt. John P. WILLIAMS & Joined Said Regiment at Edenton in Chowan County from thence he marched to Wilmington & then into Pensylvania [p. 22] That he was in the battle of Germantown from thence he went to Jersey New York State & Connecticut & Continued in the army for upwards of two years & a half when he was discharged, which discharge he has lost and the Said Willm FARMER Swears that he is in reduced circumstances & Stands in need of the assistance of his Country for Support haveing lost the Sight of one eye & being Subject to other bodily disabillity which is ordered to be certified to the Sec- retary of War. Term 1818] Personally appeared in Court Mathew LYON an inhabitant of Said County and an indigent officer of the Revolutionary army renouncing all claim to pensions heretofore accrueing to him and applying to be heard respecting his claim to the benefit of the law of Congress of 18th of march 1818 Testifies & Says that Sometime in the year 1774 in the Country now called Rutland County vermont he aided in forming __?_ing and disci- plineing a company of the Volunteers then Called minute men for the defence of american Liberty of which Company he was one, that in the Spring 1775 with about 20 of Said Company he Joined Ethan ALLEN in the Successful Surprise of Tycondaroga & was with Said ALLEN in his first expedition to Canada and in the first rencontre at St Johns that immediately on his return he was appointed adjutant of the malitia Regiment within the bounds of which he lived. That on the 19th of July 1776 [p. 26] He recieved a commission as Second-Lieutenant in the army of the United States to Serve in a corps destined for the defence of the frontiers & designed to be commanded by Colo. Seth WARNER which Commission he has exhibitted. That at and about the time of General ST. CLAIRs retreat from Tycondaroga in July 1777 he was under the Special Command of that General Sometime acting as his Guide and at other times rideing express? -- That on the 14th of Said July he recieved a Commission as pay master to Col. Seth WARNERs Continental Regt which Commission he exhibits that he Served as a Volunteer in the line of WARNERs Regt. at and dureing the Siege & the takeing of BURGOYNE--That Some time in may 1778. as near as he recollects when it was understood that the remains of WARNERs Regiment were about to be ordered to the Southward in order to be Joined to other Regiments he wrote to the Commanding General for leave to resign Still continueing to pay the Scattered and dispersed officer & Soldiers of [p. 27] The Regiment the public money remaining in his hands until Sometime in the Summer when he learned that another paymaster was appointed altho he had recieved no answer [note: "answer" double-underlined] to his letter requesting leave to resign on Which information he accepted the appointment of Paymaster General of the Troops & Malitia of the State of Vermont. That in July 1780 being called on to Settle his accounts he made a Settlement with Wm. BEDLOW auditor of accounts for the eastern department and on the 25th of Said July recieved from Said auditor a discharge for all the public money he had recieved which discharge he exhibits. That in 1779 he was appointed Captain in the malitia & on 12th novbr. 1781 he was promoted to the Command of the 16th Regiment of the malitia of Vermont with the rank of Colonel a regiment on the frontier which was much engaged in Service those Commissions are also exhibited and the Said Matthew LYON further Swears that having through misfortune in trade lost his property he is in reduced circum- stances [p. 28] & being in his 70th year illy able to labour he Stands in need of the assistance of his Country for Support.
