BARNETT, JAMES.Researching my gggrandmother NANCY VOYLES BARNETT, whose husband WILLIAM BARNETT died sometime after 1860. Nancy then remarried, and her husband (this her third) killed her in plain sight of her children LOUISA, SUE, AND JESSE. Although most of my research has centered in Ohio, Hancock and Daviess Counties, I understand that a MRS. NANCY BARNETT married a SCOTT JAMES October 3, 1861, in Caldwell County. So here are my
questions: 1) When did William Barnett die and where is he buried? 2)
Is the Nancy Barnett who married in Caldwell County really my Nancy
Barnett? If she is, she probably died no later than 1865, but that's
purely conjecture. 3) What happened to Scott James? If he was my
gggrandmother's murderer, he managed to flee before the posse caught up
with him and my ggrandmother feared his return to "get her" the rest of
her life. According to the stories, after Nancy was killed, her husband
told the children he'd get them if they told, and Louisa, my
ggrandmother, blabbed. Louisa then stayed with a neighborhood family,
"Aunt Marthy" Black. The other children were farmed out elsewhere. 4)
What happened to Sue and Jesse, and their descendants? Please email
MISSUSB@aol.com. Thanks!

WILLIAMS, HUGHES, FREER, MAYES, DUNCAN.
I am searching for any information regarding the parents
and grandparents of my husband's grandfather, Lewis Alexander
WILLIAMS, born March 22, 1846, in Caldwell Co., KY. In the 1850
census his family is listed as: Elizabeth A. WILLIAMS, age 47, born
So. Carolina; children (all born in Caldwell Co.), Martha A., 21;
Mary H., 17; Manerva J., 14; Permilia, 12; John C., 10; Lewis A., 4.
The father's name may be Lewis, also. I was told there were two other
brothers, all serving in the Civil War, two for the north and two for
the south. And they all lived through it. Elizabeth may have been a
FREER as the WILLIAMS and FREER families are related in some way.
Elizabeth later married Pulaski J. HUGHES in 1852 in Caldwell Co. In
1860 she was living in Poplar Bluff, MO, with: G.W. WILLIAMS, 27,(a
son?); her daughter Permilia and husband John MAYS/MAYES, 27, and
three small children; her daughter Jane (Manerva) HUGHES; Alexander
FREER, 22, wife Jane and daughter; and housekeeper Eliza MILLS. Are
there any death records that might have a listing of Elizabeth's two
husbands?

BROWN, MONTGOMERY, RAY, CARTWRIGHT.My name is Michael A. Montgomery, son of James Carroll Montgomery and Mary
Helen Brown. My mother was born of Major Johnson Brown (senior) and Mary
Agnes Ray. They lived in Crider, all of the Brown children went to school in
Princeton. Major Sr. had one sister Lottie Brown, and three brothers Logan,
Tom, and William. Their parents are believed to be Ira E. Brown 1868-1927
and Laura Blackburn ?-?. Ira is believed to have siblings James Brown, born
in 1857, Bob Johnson Brown born March 1860, Henry Calhoun Brown born 1863,
Docia Brown b;1864, Idona Brown b; Aug. 1871, and Mary Brown b; 1874.
The above's parents are believed to be William Patrick Calhoun Brown
(1836-1911) and Nancy J. Guess (1835-1896). After Nancy's death, Wm married
Lizzie McQuigg 1877 - ? and had sons Clifton J. Pratt Brown b;1903, and Allen
Brown b;?.
The above's parents are believed to be Leonard Brown and Sarah H. Cartwright.
We have no info beyond Leonard Brown nor do we know any dates not already
mentioned. Sarah's parents are believed to be Justinian Cartwright and
Frances Gillaspie married around 1777 in Richmond Va. and moved to Ky.?
If you can assist in filling in the blanks of our family history and tree, we
would be very greatfull. We would gladly send you our family tree
constructed so far with Family Tree Maker Deluxe. We are having great
difficulty with the Montgomery name beyond William Fountain Montgomery, and
some children believed to be living around Providence, Ky. where my father
went to school. His father was George E. Montgomery who grew up around
Dalton, Ky.

FRALICK, BEAVERS.I am looking for descendants of these families who migrated to Caldwell Co from Pittsylvania, VA, probably in the 1830-40s, I believe: David Fraley/Frala/Fralick (b. about 1790) and married Lucy Thompson (b. abt 1791) in Pittsylvania Co, VA in 1817.
Their daughter, Lemary b. abt 1818, m. Samuel BEAVERS abt. 1842, in Caldwell
Co, I think. Don't know when & where she died, but I find Samuel with a wife
named Pamela several years later. Lemary Fraley Beavers had siblings as
follows:
James (m. Margaret Robertson) b. abt 1820
Anna (m. William Hughey)
Sarah (m. Michael Hughey)
Senia (m. William W. Johnson)
Edmond (m. Senia Dixon)
Mary (m. Tilford Dixon)
William Wesley (m. Julia Nelson)
I think some of them are buried in a cemetery called Hill and some in the
Livingston Cemetery. In the 1850-1860s, many of these ancestors moved into
MO. I don't know when or where David Fralick died, but Lucy lived to a ripe
old age of 91 and died in St Clair Co, MO.
If anyone knows anything about this line, or can check cemetery books, please
e-mail me at DEEMATH@aol.com Thanks so much.

MALOTT, GRAY, HAMMOND. I have for the past several months been trying to search the family genealogy. Family lore has it that my gr gr grandmother was "full blood" Cherokee. I had about discounted this until I came across research done by a relative now deceased that listed my gr grandmother
as "half Indian" Her name was Mariah Gray born abt 1848 in KY. died 19 July 1920, Married William H. Malott in IN 25 Jan. 1874. On Mariah's death certificate her mother, Mary Hammond (Cherokee?) was listed as born in KY. Her father, James Gray, was listed as born in KY. I think the birth places of Hammond and Gray are wrong, as I have found in Caldwell Co. KY census of 11 Sept 1850 a family listing:
James H. Gray ------------- born So Carolina in 1815 or 16
Mary A. ------------------- born Virginia in 1810 or 11
Mariah E.------------------ born 1846 Coalaway? City KY
I think this is my family.

THOMAS, HAMILTON, FLINT. My great-great-grandfather Samuel THOMAS
lived in Caldwell County from about 1802 until 1813. He moved there with his
mother, Elizabeth HUBBARD THOMAS who had remarried a man named William
HAMILTON before leaving Pendleton Co., S.C. Samuel had four brothers and
sisters by his father Irwin THOMAS and five half brothers and sisters by his
step-father Mr. HAMILTON. William HAMILTON died in 1811 and Elizabeth married
a man by the name of John FLINT. As far as I know there were no children by
her union with Mr. FLINT. In 1822 Mr. FLINT died and Elizabeth HUBBARD THOMAS
HAMILTON FLINT left Kentucy with her son Lewis HAMILTON to join her son,
Samuel THOMAS who had settled in Greene Co. Illinois. I am looking for any
information on these folks pertaining to their time in Caldwell Co. Most
importantly, the names of as many of the children as might be found. I assume
that as many as five or as few as three of the Hamilton children might have
been born there.19 June 1996

GREER I am working on the family of James T. Greer, Sr. and his wife
Elizabeth who lived on the Dry Fork of Eddy Creek in Christian/Livingston/Caldwell
Counties during successive new county formations. The will of James T.
Greer, Sr., listed his children in order as Jonathan, William, Isaac,
Ruth and James T. Greer, Jr. Son Jonathan Greer d. between 1807/1808 as
shown by court records. His widow Mary "Polly" Greer married Wm.
Hopson,Sr. of Christian County in 1819. She took her two children
Jonathan and Mary Greer to live with her near Hopkinsville. Son William
eventually (ca. 1819 or a bit earlier) moved to Marengo Co.,Alabama, with
some other Greers from the same neighborhood of W KY and he died there.
Ruth Greer married John Pennington about 1817 in Caldwell Co, where they
lived on land she inherited from her father. James T. Greer, Sr. died in
1810 in Caldwell Co., and his wife Elizabeth died a few months later the
same year, same place.
Other Greers in the same counties in Kentucky were Joseph, Josiah (d.
1803 in Lvgston Co), Jesse, possibly Robert, Levy, John Sr. and Jr., Aaron,
Thomas, a second Joseph and a second Isaac. Also a James N. Greer.
I have been leaning in the direction of thinking that these Greers were
out of the area of Spartanburg/Laurens/etc. South Carolina (counties
along Enoree or Duncan? Creeks formed from Old Ninety-Six District).
There were Greers, Kilgores, Glenns, Birdsongs in that region who served
in the Little River Regiment of the SC Militia in the Revolution, and the
same groups of surnames appear in the areas of W Kentucky originally
mentioned in this (seemingly endless) query.
If anyone has a clue if these Greers are the same bunch, please contact
me. Happy Greer

JARRETT, STEPHENSON Am seeking information on an Andrew M. Jarrett, originally from Monohegala Cnty, W.V. who married a Mary Stephenson and appears in the 1850 census index as residing in Caldwell County. They had 2 daughters who were born in Ky (based on 1860 census), county unknown, but most likely Caldwell. They're names are Laura or Lorena Jarrett (hard to
read from the census sheet) born approx Feb. 1853, and Almyra or Viola
(little unsure here as to correct name, as both appear in our family
histories) Jarrett, born approx. July 1856. By 1860, the Jarrett family
had moved to La Grange, MO, where they are recorded in the 1860 census.
Would like to know how far back, Caldwell county maintained birth
records? Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated.

STEVENS/STEPHENS FAMILY
I am interested in any information available on the family of Elijah Stevens whose will was proved in Caldwell County on 20 October 1834. According to this will, his children by unknown first wife were Edward, William, Elijah, and Jesse. Children by second wife (Elizabeth, I believe) were Herrington, Ann, Samuel, Zadock, Lucretia, Edmund, and Littleton.
Littleton Stevens, who married Lucretia ?, is my ancestor. Littleton's widow and at least some of his children resided in Graves County at least by the time of the 1850 census. Perhaps, Littleton had lived there also. I do not know when he died.
I will happily share any information that I have with others. 19 Sept 1996
